Kelly Myrkle: I tried out the new Moyes Gecko today at Point of the Mountain in Draper, Utah. I have to say I am impressed with everything about this glider! This thing flies like a dream. Big thanks to Jonny Durand for the test flight and the Redbull!

The first thing I noticed when I picked it up was how light and well balanced the glider is. The control frame seemed to be the perfect size for me. It was a little smaller than what I am use to but it felt like I could really lock my shoulders into the glider. Ground handling the glider to launch really seemed effortless. Walking to launch I held the glider at different angles of attack and wings level or unlevel to see how hard the glider was to get back into place where it should be. I didn’t get to crazy with it, but I felt like it was very easy to manage in windy conditions.
The glider is balanced well so on launch it is easy to hold the nose at the proper angle of attack. It is not tail heavy at all. I launched with wind so the launch run was short but I’d be willing to bet this glider would be a breeze to launch in no wind conditions.
Once I was in the air I noticed the bar is a bit further down my body than what I am use to but it was easy to adapt to that. It’s probably around the same bar position as a best glide for some gliders, the experts could give you more details if you wanted.
The handling of the Gecko is amazing. I benched up at the north side at 7:30pm no problem and in very short time. It has very light bar pressure throughout most of the bar positions I experimented with. On the way to stuffing the bar, the pressure increases but never seemed to be hard to hold with 3/4 am extension. This thing is fast. The glider seems like it builds up a lot of energy quick and it holds the energy well. Releasing the built up energy in a controlled manner was easy .
With the VG off the sail is really baggy almost as though it is a single surface glider. It sure feel like one when you are just boating around. The rope is so easy to pull on that it makes you wonder if it even does anything. Once VG is full on it gets serious. The wing stiffens up like most of the higher end king posted gliders. The Gecko flies straight and did not feel «skatey» or seem to «wing walk» like other gliders I have flown. I had no problem penetrating into the wind away from the mountain.
Landing was easy despite being rocked a little.
I flew in smooth conditions late in the day so I can’t comment on how the glider handles in midday thermic conditions. I’d say that this glider is easy and fun to fly for the weekend warrior with potential to be a serious threat in the sport class in the hands of the right pilot.

I hooked in around 175 with no bags, water, radio, food etc. I didn’t feel light on it.

Джонни Дюранд: Having an amazing time here had two great flights this morning in the Gecko off the south side. Had a short glide off against zippy in the U2 and came out on top. We all then went to Inspiration point and I managed to fly the Gecko back to the North side. The performance on this machine will blow your mind. Come test fly it today..
